In the conventional formula for a flowing system the rate of outflow is considered to be the same as the inflow. The difference is strictly recognized when respiratory quotient deviates from one. Therefore, a modified formula for a flowing system including ethylene was derived for the gas exchange among the commodity, inside and outside of a respiratory chamber. The error obtained in the respiration rate using the conventional formula showed that it was dependent on the respiratory quotient, ethylene production ratio, and outflow concentration. A modified formula in a steady state, which was independent of these factors, is proposed. The conditions of the conventional formula, which can be used, were identified. Furthermore, a method for determining the flow rate and the time at which measurements should be started was determined.
