In order to find the husking properties of paddy grains it was evaluated from the husking strength under pseudo-static frictional force. Husking strength, defined as the critical shearing stress, was calculated as the maximum frictional force divided by the contact area between a paddy and a rubber plate. The maximum frictional force was measured by a direct shear tester, while the contact area between a paddy and a rubber plate was obtained according to Hertz's elastic theory. The husking strength was shown as a normal distribution curve, which was influenced by the grain variety, husking position and grain shape.
