Abstract

The odjective of this study is to develop a storage technique which retains the quality of cabbages during storage. The storage apparatus consisted of insulated plastic containers placed on the top of a ventilated wooden box.
A fan and valves were employed to circulate cold air throughout the apparatus. The timer controlled fan expelled the cold air through an exhaust valve and at same time drew fresh cold air to the apparatus through an intake valve. The valves closed and the ventilation cycle was completed. The fan remained on for approximately 1 or 2 minutes to thoroughly circulate the air throughout the apparatus. The fan then stopped and the apparatus became air tight.
The apparatus was able to retain the quality of stored cabbages for about two months, ventilating only once a day. We concluded that the ventilated system was better than the non-ventilated one.
