Abstract

Possibility of knowing some properties, such as surface profile and bulk density of sand, by measuring the horizontal components of resistance and acting point on the vertical tine traveling through sand was examined. Cylindrical soilbin with rotative mechanism was used to reduce efforts for refilling the sand in the soilbin and assure uniformness of this sand.
In the experiments under the sand condition refilled by this soilbin, the horizontal components of resistance working on the tine under constant depth had similar frequency distribution, showing uniform sand condition obtained by rotating the soilbin. It will be possible to predict the surface profile of sand and the change of bulk density in sand by these measurements.
