This paper presents a detecting algorithm of watermelon fruits to develop an automatic harvesting system by robot. In this study, methods to discern watermelon using color scale image or gray scale image utilizing specific spectrum were investigated. A method was investigated to extract the region of fruits, which hide behind leaves, by swaying them with air blast, through motion image processing. As the result, it was found that watermelon can be discerned by the gray scale image utilizing the spectrum where reflectance of black and green stripes on fruit surface are close, and the extraction of fruit hiding region was possible by using a sequential image of swaying leaves.
