A high performance automatic bypass flow (BF) control system has been developed for pneumatic type LVAD. The system design is based on the concept of “simultaneous two-level control”, in which two hemodynamic parameters (left atrial pressure & total flow) can be controlled by an automatic variation of BE through LVAD. The change in BE is achieved by electronically varying Fs-values (Fs; systolic duration for LVAD in percentage). The range of Fs and the gain of Fs change can be set at any time by the use of another microcomputer. The application of this control system to chronic animal experiments with induced heart failure demonstrated stable maintenance of hemodynami cs and effective aid of cardiac function.
