Abstract
Surgical closure of the ventricular septal rupture (VSR) following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is still one of the most formidable procedure to cardiac surgeon. While the surgical results in chronic stage are satisfactory, the results in acute stage are still miserable because of friability of the infarcted myocardial muscle. This experimental work was undertaken to develop a new method to close the VSR Temporarily. A couple of an umbrella made of stainless-steel ribs covered with Dacron fabrics are used to close the VSR with an aid of specially designed introducer. Closure of the experimental VSR with this umbrella was successful in eight dogs among seventeen dogs. One dog was sacrificed three weeks after closure of the VSR. The macroscopic and microscopic findings showed complete closure of the VSR with good organization of the Dacron fabric. In conclusion, this umbrella method for closure of the VSR, seems to be attractive and promising but further modification is necessary before its clinical use.
