Abstract
The blood pooling inside the oxygenator may make blood coagulation, especially during assist circulation because of low dose heparin. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pooling of oxygenators quantitatively. The circuit including the oxygenator was perfused with distilled water (3.5μS/cm) at the speed of 2.0l/mm, then 10ml of saline (16, 050μS/cm) was injected at the influx of the oxygenator. At the efflux of the exygenator, electric conductivity (voltage) of the perfusate was measured, continuously. As oxygenators, Univox-Gold, Maxima-CB1380 and Capiox-II 50 (H) which are heparin coated oxygenators, were tested. In results, time from the point of maximum voltage (Vmax) to one of one fourth of Vmax (1/4 Vmax) were 11.2sec, 20.0sec and 16.8sec in Univox, Maxima and Capiox, respectively. In conclusion, the pooling of the oxygenator was smallest in Univox and smaller in Capiox than in Maxima.
