Abstract
A glucose infusion mechanism was added to our artificial beta cell. In this artificial endocrine pancreas, glucose infusion rate was based on the proportional and derivative actions to blood glucose concentration with the time delay with the blood withdrawal and the initiation of glucose infusion.
It was demonstrated that the prompt and stable restorement of insulin-induced hypoglycemia to normoglycemia was shown in depancreatized dogs with a small glucose infusion amount when glucose was infused on the basis of the proportional plus derivative action with the least time delay.
This result indicates that the artificial endocrine pancreas is not only a useful device to control the blood glucose safely, but also an elegant research tool to analyze the blood glucose regulatory mechanism.
