Abstract
A simple colorimetric analysis method for the quantification of iodine in seaweed was established. The method can be used to process many samples simultaneously, rapidly, and at low cost. The dried powdered sample was converted to ash at 550 ℃ over 30 min and the iodine was extracted with distilled water at 90 ℃ for 60 min and quantified by measuring the absorbance of iodine in chloroform at 510 nm. The coefficient of variation was determined to be 1.45 % using repeated measurements of the dried powder of brown algae, Ecklonia cava ssp. kurome. The iodine concentration for E. cava subsp. stolonifera obtained in this study (4.43 mg/g) had a small difference from that obtained by GC analysis (4.84 mg/g). In addition, when the iodine content of three kinds of commercially available kelp was quantified using the simple method, these results had a small difference previously published reference values obtained using ICP-MS. Based on these results, the simple colorimetric quantitative analysis method established in this study allows for the easy quantification of iodine in seaweed.
