Augmented reality (AR) contact lenses are state-of-the-art display devices. A significant limitation in AR contact lenses is the inability of the eyes to focus on the display device embedded in the contact lens, because the display screen is too close to the eyes. Holographic contact lens displays can address this issue using the three-dimensional image generation ability of holography. This article explains the principle, fundamental experimental results, and device techniques required for the commercialization of holographic AR contact lenses.
