Abstract
Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) for GM crops have been conducted in Japan since February 19, 2004, under the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol. In Japan, GM crop suppliers are required to conduct field tests (Stage-3 tests) at isolated fields regardless of whether GM crops will be commercially grown. This paper presents the results of Stage-3 tests of four already approved GM corn products with different traits, including glyphosate tolerance, lepidopteran resistance, coleopteran resistance, high lysine, and drought tolerance, conducted by Monsanto Japan Limited. This paper also describes how the ERAs for the four GM corn products were conducted based on the results of the Stage-3 tests, and suggests appropriate data requirements for GM corn that will not be commercialized in Japan.
