X-ray was applied as an external agent to developing rice embryos at different stages. Stage-specific responses were observed with regard to survival of M1 plants to maturity and to the induction of twins in M1 seedlings. Twin types also varied according to the developmental stage of embryos at irradiation. On the basis of these results, stages of differentiation in cells prior to microscopically visible differentiation in embryonic organs are estimated.
