Generally speaking rice is chasmogamous, but at times cleistogamous varieties in which spikelets are unable to open at blooming time are found. Histalogically they have singular glumes, in which the lower part can not be differentiated and the palea and lemma is united. As a result the spikelets are tightly held in at blooming time while having normal swelled lodiculus. This characteristic behaves as single recessive (gene symbol cls) to normal. It is worthy of note that the cleistogamous variety has a singular form, with compact panicles, small spikelets and somewhat short plant height as in the case of "Datkoku" dwarf. In the cross betvveen cleistogamous variety and normal varieties the F2 plants having cls also show a dwarf appearance without exception. It is not yet ascertained whether this deformity is responsible for the pleiotropic effect of cls or not, however, an F3 line gives such a segregaticn that shows the occurence of crossing over between cls and gene for deformity. In addtion to thls cls links to "Lop leaved "dwarf (d6) with the recombination value of about in repu-Ision phase.
