The effect of low temperature treatment on autumn seed production was studied for the purpose of shortning the breeding period of chinese cabbage. (1) Chinese cabbage plants grown through low temperature treatment (average from -2-1'C) for 32 days immediately after their germination hastened their bolting and flowering in autumn, and produced good ripened seeds of high germination percentage (81%), without the danger of crossing with other varieties in the field. Thus the application value of this method to practical seed growing and to breeding technic of chinese cabbage might be highly expected. (2) Although many practical problems remain to be studied, in breedig work, it might be an advantage of this method that two generations can be made in the same year, enabling the selection of clear characters in early stage of the plants.
