1) Amylase activities in germinating seeds were determined in the 65 leading wheat varieties of 142 samples collected from all over Japan. 2) Regarding B amylase activity, the varieties with stronger activities, were distributed in colder zone, and the varieties with weaker activities in warmer zone. 3) Distinct tendency of ci amylase activities distribution as B amylase activity was not recognisable. 4) The varieties of the higher degree of winter habit showed stronger B amylase activities and those of the lower degree of it weaker, althouglr wide variations of, e amylase activity were distinguished among the same degree of winter habit. 5) Furthermore su.ch tendencies were detected' in some varieties as the seeds produced in colder" zone showed stronger B amylase activity than the seeds collected from warmer zone of the same variety. 6) Analysis of emzyme activity such as amylaseand catalase was discussed to be useful for understanding the variation and differentiation of ecologrical varieties of grain crops.
