Abstract

Highway bridges and tunnels are inspected regulary once in five years. Inspection results for bridges revealed 9% of total stock was category III, which requires prompt countermeasure, and 0.9% was category IV, requires emergent action. Calculating from annual budget, it will take about 20 years to repair all bridges of categories III and IV. Therefore importance of preventive maintenance is highlighted. At Public Works Research Institute, AI based diagnosis system is being developed. In addition early detectdion and countermeasures are studied for slab degradation to aggregate, concrete bridge damage from salt, and scour of bridge foundation in river.
