Abstract

In JR East, many deteriorations due to salt damage are found on concrete bridges located within about 1 km from a coastline. As a countermeasure, we have mainly applied Cathodic Protection Method for PC girders and Suppressing Salt Injury Method for RC girders. These countermeasure are results organized as basic idea for maintenance and management of bridges exposed to salt-laden environments in JR East, considering results of long-term durability evaluation of countermeasures and effects of salt damage control which are obtained from more than 20 years follow-up observation after application of the countermeasures. Studies carried out until now, a proposal of basic idea for maintenance and management, and direction for future maintenance and management for salt-damaged structures are described below.
