Abstract

 This study reports on the implementation case of “Bridge Log,” an application enabling citizens to perform simple bridge inspections without specialized knowledge, along with feedback and improvement points gathered during implementation, and future prospects. By being developed as a web application, Bridge Log is OS-independent and features functions such as location-based bridge selection, simple inspection, emergency notification, and result viewing/editing. Results from its introduction in resident-led self-maintenance in Hirata Village, Fukushima Prefecture, and as a project for a technical high school revealed that while account registration posed a challenge for the elderly, younger users actively utilized it, confirming its educational benefits. Based on feedback from these implementations, we improved features such as PDF output and offline recording. Thus, we demonstrated that Bridge Log supports routine condition monitoring to supplement periodic inspections and holds potential as an ICT tool for bridge maintenance linked to citizen participation and education.
