Abstract

 In Japan, there is a growing demand to enhance and streamline periodic inspections to reduce the maintenance costs of ageing bridges. Inspection drones are set to replace conventional methods, as they allow for relaxed traffic restrictions and scaffolding requirements. However, due to the limited number of reported cases of practical implementation, the procedure from inspection plan formulation to inspection commencement remains in an exploratory state. In practice, the procedures for drone legal requirements and permission applications are complex, and the involved stakeholders vary depending on the flight location. This paper discusses the legal requirements for drone-based bridge inspections and examines the challenges and proposed improvements prior to their commencement.
