Abstract
Linear and nonlinear internal resonances in a physical model of cable-and-beam structure are studied. Special emphasis is placed on autoparametric resonance. An experiment using a scale model was conducted where model parameters are identified with special care. A 3-DOF analytical model based on local and global modes is also derived where finite motion of the cable introduces geometrical nonlinearities in quadratic and cubic forms. Steady-state solutions of the coupled nonlinear equations of motion are obtained by the perturbation technique. Very good agreement between experiment and prediction is found for both vertical and horizontal harmonic excitations.
