Abstract
This paper is based on the vast amount of papers published and documents related to Chinese railway bridges before 1949. The railway bridge design, in the period before and in the early beginning of the establishment of the railway bridge design standard, is introduced, also the history of the modification and development of the modem Chinese railway bridge design standard presented. Focus is given on the effect of foreign standard on the Chinese design standard, and comparisons are made between the Chinese railway design standard and Japanese one.
