Abstract
This paper describes a review of the legislation, technical standards on highway bridge design check and review procedures in Britain, Germany, Belgian, and the Netherlands. The study includes interviews with some professionals on the procedures. We observe that there are some elements in common in each nation's procedures. An owner of highways bridges is designated as an important player of the procedures in Britain and Germany. A checker outside a design consultant is required for all bridges in Germany, Belgian, and the Netherlands, for complex bridges in Britain to ensure commercial independence of checking. Independent design calculations by a checker are required to ensure technical independence of checking in Britain, Germany and Belgian.
