Abstract
One of the roles of media in communicating disaster news is to educate non affected residents about disaster. The purpose of this paper is to reveal how the media educate and affect people about disaster. For this research the Indian Ocean Tsunami was used as a case study. The research revealed that most residents who had viewed the news broadcast on the Indian Ocean Tsunami had a change in attitude about tsunami disaster, however, only a few residents had a change in behavior. In light of the above we therefore suggest that the mass media must provide residents with very detail information on the disaster on the disaster in order to bring about a concrete change in behavior.
