Abstract
Japan is proactively constructing barrier-free sidewalks. However, their high cost has inhibited their development and installation. Thus, it is necessary to set a clear priority for the future barrier-free construction and to efficiently and effectively move forward with construction.
The purpose of this study is to propose priorities for construction of barrier-free sidewalks. This is to be accomplished by utilizing GIS and developing a database for traffic barriers on sidewalks and a “barrier-free aid system for sidewalk” that also has a navigation system for wheelchair users. The study pragmatically puts into practice a methodology for constructing barrier-free sidewalks based on a qualitative assessment.
