Abstract
The purpose of this study is to systematize the fundamental principles underlying the structure and form of a bridge and propose a method for their operations. Here, the “structure” represents the mechanical frame, while the “form” represents the visual shape. Although a bridge has a number of structural systems, we study the spanning system in particular, since it directly influences the structure and form of a bridge. For this purpose, the continuous and symmetrical relationships among each bridge type are clarified by considering both their structures and forms. Further, such relationships have been illustrated in a structure-form correlation chart. Transferring and mixing in this correlation chart mean the operations of the structure and form of bridges, and nine methods of operation could be proposed through this research.
