To achieve the Paris Agreement climate goals, it is important to reduce emissions from the transportation sector, which is a major source of energy-related CO2 emissions. In this study, we estimated the impact of many new transportation sector technologies, services, and policies, such as car sharing, automated driving, and road pricing, on emissions, energy mix, abatement costs, and other sectors in order to achieve the 2 degree target. The results suggest that changes in the transportation sector can not only reduce oil consumption and emissions, but also ease emission constraints in other sectors, reduce carbon prices, and significantly reduce additional investments in the energy system. We found that policies such as proactive demand reduction and fuel efficiency improvement in the transportation sector have many positive impacts not only on emissions but also on costs.
