Abstract
This research proposes an improved bus signal priority model in urban arterial roads based on the coordination between bus speed guidance and signal timing techniques. Unlike most of previous models about bus signal priority, the proposed model considers not only signal timing techniques, traffic factors but also recommended bus speed guidance to grant priority to buses for its smooth travel through intersection groups of arterial roads. By conducting two approaches of investigation, analytical approach and simulation one, the research concludes that the proposed model is significantly efficient. Compared with conventional adaptive models that were developed to grant priority to buses by minimizing the total traffic delay only, the proposed model reduces traffic delay considerably, by up to 7.12% in terms of link delay average. The proposed model with its good performance can be integrated into simulation models to investigate the performance more realistically.
