Abstract

The transport sector accounts for about 20% of Japan's CO2 emissions, of which freight trucks account for about one-third. In addition, heavy duty large trucks are behind in decarbonization due to electrification, etc., compared to passenger cars, and it is necessary to consider the actual traffic characteristics of them. The objective of this study is to examine the possibility of decarbonization of heavy duty trucks, especially for long-haul truck transportation with the distance of about 1000 km, using the Well to Wheel analysis to trace back to primary energy sources. We estimated the cost of electrification, which is expected to be a major issue. As a result, we found that it is difficult to reduce the carbon content of heavy duty trucks by electrification with the current power source configuration, and it is essential to reduce the carbon content of the power source.
