In Japanese expressway pavements, deeper layers are damaged due to the change of surface materials from dense graded pavements to high-performance pavements and the decline in structural load bearing capacity caused by deterioration. In practice, stratified repair is conducted according to damage status, but the recovery of structural load bearing capacity has not been measured in quantitative ways, so the relation between the effects of stratified repair and structural load bearing capacity has not been clarified. In this study, the variation in load bearing capacity of a pavement structure is modeled as a combined process, which is composed of (1) a process of deterioration with time and (2) a process of recovery through repair. With this, it will be possible to not only predict the decline in structural load bearing capacity, but also quantify the recovery through repair with a transitional probability. Furthermore, the authors discuss the usefulness of the proposed model, by applying it to real expressway pavements.
