Abstract

The edge line marking indicates the outer edge of the roadway as well as the roadside strip which is a walking space. The purpose of this study is to clarify how the implementation is decided, and to grasp its characteristics as a traffic safety measure for pedestrians. First, we reviewed the relevant regulations on the “Road Structure Ordinance” and “Road Traffic Act”. Then we recognized that the edge line marking has two different aspects: “to effect to a roadway” and “to create pedestrian space”. Next, we conducted interview surveys and questionnaire surveys with road administrators to obtain data such as the process of judgment in the implementation of countermeasures, the judgment factors to be considered, their selection trends and weighting, the implementation status of countermeasures, etc. As a result of the consideration, we found that the roadway edge marking is a method that is easy to obtain a decision to implement, but the implementation as a pedestrian safety measure requires a motivation as to protect pedestrians due to its two-sidedness.
