Abstract

In this study, we try to explore the role of public transit with subscription-based fare. To know how people’s transportation mode choices will be affected by the fare system, we conducted a free public transit experiment on 66 people in Aichi Prefecture. The results show that if the fee is free, many people increase public transit use except people who hesitate to use public transit due to environmental factors. The results also show that public transit use for shopping and leisure could increase and the use for commuting could vary. Low-frequency public transit which is considered as a transportation mode for non-auto-users could play an important role as a feeder to the various destinations if they are integrated into main public transit by the subscription-based fare systems.
