Abstract

This study aims to estimate the speed-spacing relationship for each section and vehicle to elucidate the factors that determine traffic flow characteristics, such as traffic capacity. To achieve this, a model based on hierarchical Bayesian modeling is proposed to capture the Greenshields speed-spacing relationship for individual sections and vehicles. The proposed model was then estimated using complete vehicle trajectory data. The results were subsequently interpreted to investigate the influence of sections and vehicles on driving behavior. This analysis enabled the separate estimation of free-flow speed and jam spacing for different sections and vehicles. Notably, the results revealed that both section and vehicle affect free-flow speed, while jam spacing is primarily influenced by vehicle.
