Abstract

Tipping weir whose structural form is the inclined sharp-crested weir has performance to realize easily the desired upstream water level corresponding to the discharge. In order to operate the weir efficiently and to make rational planning of its construction, it is necessary to develop the calculation method for discharge, upstream head and weir height of inclined sharp-crested weirs. In this pater, an attempt is made to give the explicit equation for each of the above three quantities as the mutual-dependence relation for free flow over inclined sharp-crested weirs. Functional relation between the critical depth to weir height ratio and the upstream head to weir height ratio was deduced on the basis of momentum theorem, then the relationship was determined using the experimental data by U. B. S. R. for various angles of weir plate incline and wide range of upstream head to weir height ratio. The derived equations for the three target quantities showed good agreement with experimental data for the range of upstream head to weir height ratio between about 0.3 and 14, almost full range of experiments by U. B. S. R.
