Abstract
In order to improve the performance of the water exchange breakwater, an intake type water exchange breakwater consisting of double curtain walls was newly proposed in this study. To enhance both the wave energy dissipation by the breakwater and the water exchange function due to wave motions for the wide range of wave period, a double- curtain walled breakwater with a submerged water channel was adopted. Special considerations have been given to solve the contradictory problem. Typically, on one side, it is required to seek an effective cross section of the breakwater for reducing both the reflected and transmitted waves for extreme wave conditions. However on the other side, the effective cross section for the water exchange through the breakwater for nominal wave conditions is required. It was found out that the double curtain walled breakwater proposed in this study was a possible solution for solving the contradictory problem.
