Abstract
Rough-textured pavements have been increasingly installed because the pavement's rough surface texture affords greater traveling safety than conventional pavements. High-performance SMA, whose installation has been increasing on routes managed by the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau, affords good traveling safety because of its rough surface texture. The Bureau tentatively specified construction standard values for the finished road surface texture, and it plans to further improve the standards. To contribute to the improvement of the standards, detailed examination of the relationship between road surface texture and traveling safety is required. In this study, the relationship between the road surface texture and traveling safety was examined. The results of examination were as follows: 1) the road surface texture and the water supply that contributes to the formation of water and ice films are closely related; and 2) it is possible to assess traveling safety on an actual road by using the relationship between road surface texture and water supply that contributes to the formation of water and ice films.
