Abstract

Silica sand and natural sand (high-quality sand) are used as bedding sand and joint sand for ILblock pavements. Since natural sand is expensive, it is thought that using an alternative material with the same performance as natural sand can contribute to cost reduction. Therefore, the authors focused on molten slag produced by incinerating household waste as an alternative to natural sand. Based on the understanding of the material properties by laboratory tests and the results of field tests conducted in actual construction, the applicability of the molten slag was examined.

As a result, it was found that the molten slag had greater resistance to fine-graining and interlocking effect and that there was no significant difference in the results of the three-year field test, indicating that the molten slag used for bedding sand and joint sand had the same performance as the existing material.
