Abstract
The massive-scale disaster due to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake brought an opportunity for two new attempts to be made in providing post-disaster housing. One is the extensive use of existing housing stocks and the other is the participation by the local builders to join the construction of temporary housing. They share a common characteristic that both try to make use of the existing stocks and systems. In a contemporary Japanese society with decreasing birthrate and aging population, it is crucial to make use of the existing resources, not only building new things, as effective disaster prevention measures. This paper tries to evaluate the process and results of the participation by the local builders and suggest our remaining tasks for the future in order to be better prepared for the future disasters.
