This study aimed to clarify the respite care provided by experienced nurses, focusing on the commonalities and differences between pediatric wards in general hospitals and facilities for children with severe physical and mental disabilities. Ten nurses were interviewed, and the data were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively. Both types of facilities emphasized ‘care that helps ensure children return home without any changes in their health condition during respite’ and ‘care that supports each child’s individual way of living’. These forms of care included accurately ‘assessing children from a multifaceted perspective and using knowledge and information about them to understand children whose changes are difficult to discern’, ‘supporting parents’ emotions’, ‘improving children’s home life’, and ‘adapting appropriate care within the ward’. However, due to differences in roles and care environments, the facilities varied in their considerations and ingenuity. For example, pediatric wards focused on safety management to ensure children’s safety, while facilities for children with severe intellectual and physical disabilities emphasized meticulous care tailored to the characteristics of the children and their parents.
