Carbon dioxide (C02) laser processing of carbon fiber reinforced aluminum has been examined experimentally. The laser induced phenomenon in the composite was observed and the discussions were made on the thermally-induced damage mechanisms in the composite. Results showed that the critical power existed in the laser beam energy. When laser energy was lower than the critical value, the beam could not pass through the composite. On the other hand, when laser beam energy was higher than the critical value, the beam could easily pass through the thickness of the composite. The major reactants were needle-like Al4C3 and dissolution of formed Al4C3 into aluminum and free carbon was recognized.
