The through-thickness gas diffusion properties of CFRP laminates are measured at room temperature using tubular specimens. For time efficiency, a simple measuring method based on Fick's law of isotropic solids is applied to composite laminates and its effectiveness is clarified by comparing with experimentally obtained properties. The helium diffusion in the presence of uniaxial loads and/ or matrix cracks is also investigated and it is shown that apparent gas diffusion properties increase in conjunction with increase of loads or damages. An analytical model based on thermodynamics and continuum damage mechanics is applied to apparent diffusion properties of laminates in the presence of matrix cracks and loads. Finally, comparisons with test data are provided for model verifications.
