The efficacy of triple drug regimens including Rifampicin (RFP) was compared with the ordinary triple drug regimen. The previously untreated pulmonary tuberculosis patients with positive cultures and/or cavity were allocated at random to the following three regimens.
I……Streptomycin 1 g. twice weekly plus Isoniazid 300 mg in three divided doses daily plus PAS 10 g. in three divided doses daily (90 patients).
II……Streptomycin 1 g. twice weekly plus Isoniazid 300 mg in three divided doses daily plus RFP 450 mg in a single dose daily (89 patients).
III……Isoniazid 300 mg in three divided doses daily plus PAS 10 g. in three divided doses daily plus RFP 450 mg in a single dose daily (89 patients).
The rate of sputum conversion by culture at 6 months was 83.3% in I. regimen, 97.9% in II. regimen and 98.0% in III. regimen. Thus the RFP regimenseems to be advantageous over the combination of Streptomycin, Isoniazid and PAS.
