The total production area of Japanese pear in 2035 may decrease to one third that in 2005. In order to mitigate this critical situation, production technology with labor saving and easy management must be developed as soon as possible. Tree joint training system developed by Kanagawa Prefecture Agricultural Technology Center enables labor saving and easy management in pruning, and less burden in management by improvement of posture. This system has already been adopted by many farmers all over Japan. In the course of our research on developing new automatic machines by robotics for labor saving fruit production, we have confirmed significant labor saving effects in harvesting and pruning by using automatic vehicles in the orchard. In addition, the new cultivation system by the Joint V-shaped trellis system appears to further promote automatic mechanization in Japanese pear production.
