Abstract

【Purpose】This is the third-stage survey report on a study aimed at establishing a continuous nursing care system for living kidney donors. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the difficulties of living kidney donors before and after transplantation as well as their needs in nursing care.【Subjects and Methods】Subjects were living donors who had donated their kidney more than one year ago. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to inquire them about the difficulties before and after the operation and their needs in nursing care. Verbatim transcripts were created from the interviews ; these transcripts were then analyzed qualitatively and inductively.【Results】Cooperation was obtained from six donors. The preoperative difficulties included difficulties in gaining understanding from people around them about donation and being able to express anxiety and, the postoperative difficulties included in coping with physical change such as pain after operation and feeling that the interest of their medical staff had shifted to the recipient of living kidney transplantation. Nursing care needs included a consultation service, moral support, life-long follow-up, and the opportunity to share their experiences.【Conclusions】It is necessary to have a long-term continuous nursing care system for living kidney donors throughout the preoperative and postoperative periods. Tasks for the future are to integrate the first- to third-stage survey findings and to examine a continuous nursing care model.
