Abstract

【Objective】In this study, we aimed to analyze factors associated with weight gain and to develop a new approach to life guidance for obese patients undergoing renal transplantation while considering the psychological aspects.【Method】The Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SF), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Transtheoretical Model were administered to 130 outpatients who had undergone renal transplantation. Moreover, patients who were classified as pre-obese or obese class I or greater underwent a motor function test.【Result】The physical health scores, as per the KDQOL-SF, of the patients did not markedly differ from those of healthy individuals; however, the mental health scores of the patients were lower than the national standards. Furthermore, anxiety was strongly associated with mental health status, and not with physical changes. Most of these obese patients who underwent renal transplantation recognized the need for lifestyle improvement, but did not change their lifestyle. The anxiety of these patients was lower than that among non-obese patients undergoing renal transplantation.【Discussion】The mental health status of the patients with renal transplantation was not good because of various anxieties. Furthermore, as obese patients undergoing renal transplantation were less likely to feel anxiety due to their personality traits, they did not exhibit any positive behaviors (such as physical exercise), which consequently led to decreased physical performance and obesity.【Conclusion】We recommend that life guidance should be performed while considering the results of mental and psychological evaluations and the treatment history.
