Abstract

The author visited French National Digital Archive Organization, French National Library (BnF) and France National Institute of Audio- Visual Research (INA) for research. BnF's Gallica project is digitizing books and periodicals at a budget of about 3 billion yen a year, and has already made 2.1 million newspapers and magazines, 1.2 million images and 550,000 books available online. BnF is a founding member of Europeana and is still driving it strongly. INA collects 14 million hours of TV programs as a legal deposit agency for television and radio programs and makes them available to academic researchers through INAthèque. In addition, it makes 2,000,000 hours of programs commercially available to the world through INAmediapro. Part of the video is open to the public through ina.fr.
