We carried out a questionnaire research involving biologists to identify issues concerning the operation of biological moving image data archives. The questionnaire asked biologists about their needs, the quantity of and recording media for potential data, and the acceptable license for donors. Results show that the possibility of educational opportunities would meet donors’ and users’ needs. The primary issues are an increase in data quantity resulting from the diffusion of digitized movie device; conversion of legacy media; necessity for donors to understand the significance of archives and open science policy, owing to their reluctance to open the data on www or approve commercial or unlimited use; appropriateness of edited data use; and guidelines to open the data on www.
