Abstract

It has been almost a year since the Asahi Broadcasting Group released 38 hours of 1970 clips of footage of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. While there was a huge response on social media immediately after the release, as of October 1, 2020, not a single request for opt-out from concerned portrait rights holders has been received. It won the Digital Archive Promotion Consortium's 2020 Digital Archive Industry Award for Contribution for "addressing a social issue without direct consideration of business by the broadcaster. The following is an overview of the archive, an example of footage released to the public, and a report on future developments that are being undertaken to ensure its continuation over the long term.
