Abstract
It is important to precisely predict the deformations of soft rock foundations for the safety evaluation of a dam body and its foundation at the design stage. Generally, soft rock foundations shows large deformability, and has strain- and stress-dependency in deformability. In this study, parameters of nonlinear deformability were firstly decided by the back calculation based on the results of in-situ plate loading tests conducted for soft rock foundation for an existing embankment dam in the stage of investigation. In order to precisely predict deformation of the foundations due to the fill placement, we made nonlinear deformation analysis using parameters evaluated above. In addition, calculated results were compared with observed distribution of vertical strain in the foundation to verify the accuracy of the analysis. We enthusiastically discussed an appropriate prediction method for the deformation of soft rock foundations due to the fill placement of embankment dams.
