Abstract
The Zeyzoun Dam in Syrian Arab Republic (called Syria, hereinafter) failed on June 4, 2002, and the dam is entirely washed away on a length of approximately 100m. Damages to the downstream area due to failure of the dam were tremendous. The Ministry of Irrigation (MOI) has responsibility to investigate the cause of failure of the Zeyzoun Dam. The MOI requested the Government of Japan to dispatch some Japanese experts of embankment dams and geology in order to support its works; investigation on the cause of failure of the Zeyzoun Dam and safety inspection of five other embankment dams under operation and construction. This paper has been prepared by the members of Japanese Investigation Team, based on the information obtained from results of interviews for design, construction, supervising and operation & management organizations for the Zeyzoun Dam and other inspected dams, studies of documents and data of design and construction management, and results of site investigations.
